This past weekend I ran my 2nd half marathon. Hart and I went to Memphis Saturday for some good food and shopping. We stayed with our friends Denny and Meredith. My sweet friend Meredith woke up early to drive me to the race course, then went back home to get the guys. The beginning of the race had a pretty big hill that lasted nearly a mile. I got past that hill to see Sarah and Ann Coleman waiting at the top for me! Definately needed that boost to keep going! I felt great through mile 7. I literally had a smile on my face the whole 7 miles and was pushing out sub 10 minute miles. I had to stop at a porta-potty once which set me back 3 minutes. Thank goodness I didn't have to stop again. I had made up my mind I couldn't afford another three minutes if I was gonna meet my goal! The next 3 miles were not as easy but I knew I was headed to the park and would get some good shade and water there. Miles 10-13.25 (yes, 13.25...did they really have to add that .15 in there??) were rough. The last water stop was at 10.5 miles. I just knew there would be one at 12 so I kept telling myself to keep running to get there. Got to mile 12 and no water stop. Agghhh! I wanted to scream. I really considered asking a random person if I could have some of their water, then I came to my senses and realized that may not be part of race etiquette! I got to mile 13 and finally saw the finish line. It didn't take me long to spot my cheerleaders and I had a last burst of energy to push hard to the end. I finished in 2 hours and 19 minutes. My goal was to be in the 2:(teens). I knew I could do 2:24 based on some of my training times. Needless to say, it was a success! The best part was the smile on my hubby's face and the big hug I got from him at the end. He was so proud of me! That's what made the hard work pay off. I think he may finally be ready to get back into running with me.
We did some more shopping after the race. I got some new running shoes while we were there. The guy that helped me was awesome. It will definately be worth driving to Memphis for shoes next time. If you are ever up that way I'll let you know where to go.
So is anyone motivated to start running now?? If so, our new group starts this week. It's going to be a little more structured this time as far as meeting times and days. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you're interested, and I'll tell you the schedule.
